The goal for the “Urban traces” workshop is to have students experiment with ways to represent and remix physical traces of human activity they discover in the built (urban) environment.
I presented “find, record, remix” [pdf] as a conceptual frame for the project, and I introduced methods of observing physical traces [pdf] based on a chapter in Inquiries for Design by John Zeisel.
Pictured: one student transformed sandbags anchoring temporary traffic signs into watchful urban spirits.
